Thirteen minutes, Twenty Nine seconds of a possible Five Hundred Fifty minutes - 2011

Source material recorded between 2005 and 2009 with a Sony TCD-D7 Digital Audio Tape recorder.

A collection of fumbles, mistakes, and errors this piece consists of sounds either unintentionally recorded or damaged through operator error, equipment malfunction, or combination there of. Lifted from over one dozen DAT cassettes recorded over a 4 year period, with a sum total recording time of five hundred fifty minutes, each sound was sequenced linearly in the order in which it was transferred from tape to computer.

Source material recorded using an Apple iPhone 3GS and its internal microphone.

Fantasy Panel uses the voices of Western Front Executive Director Caitlin Jones, visual artist Eli Bornowsky, composer Giorgio Magnanensi, and poet and visual artist Donato Mancini, as well as those present in the audience at The Western Front Vancouver BC, between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm Saturday, March 27th, 2010 for The Western Front symposium Noise Not Noise. The piece was edited at Hostile Office Ambience between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm, and performed for a "captive audience" (literally captive, as the doors were barred and barricaded) at a Secret Location in the Downtown East Side of Vancouver BC, as part of the corresponding Fake Jazz Festival programming for the Noise Not Noise symposium at 10:00pm Saturday, March 27th 2010. Only the ambience of the room, non-verbal sounds such as coughing, sniffing, chair creaks, etc, the word(s) noise, or sound, and the occasional phrase were kept in the editing process, the rest was discarded. Noise Filter.

Untitled for Balloons, People, and Choir - 2009

Audio track taken from a Mini Digital Video recording of  The Queen Margaret's School Chapel Choir with 80-90 additional student and faculty participants, recorded April 24th 2009, Queen Margaret's School Chapel, Duncan British Columbia, Canada.

In late 2008 I made the acquaintance of artist and educator Andrea Nunes following a performance of my work Untitled for Balloons and People at the Charles H. Scott Gallery. Andrea approached me about possibly borrowing the piece for use in a "sermon" she was to hold while participating as a visiting artist at her Alma mater, Queen Margaret's School in Duncan British Columbia. I gladly agreed to lend the work out in return for documentation of the performance, however Andrea informed me that amplification of the backing tape and for the single performer called for in the work would not be possible in the provided performance space. As a workaround I proposed that I write a score for the chapel choir to perform, replacing both the role of the backing tape as well as that of the single performer in framing and guiding the audience's participation in the piece. I composed a simple, timed, graphic score, with rudimentary instructions for 4 groups of any number of individuals. Although the piece was ultimately performed, Andrea encountered considerable opposition from the faculty in both realizing the work and following it's performance.

In the artists own words:

The piece happened April 24th 2009. The location was the Queen Margaret's school chapel, in Duncan, BC. There were approximately 80-90 students and staff involved. The would-be performers of your score were the Queen Margaret's School Chapel Choir-- although that was a bit of a bust; the choir master thought the piece inappropriate and told them they didn't have to show up for the practice I had planned. (He subsequently created quite a fuss with some of the faculty and alumnae. An invitation to join the Alumnae Association was rescinded and I stopped receiving correspondence from them!)

Untitled- 2007

Recorded live at Hostile Office Ambiance to a Sony TCD-D7 Digital Audio Tape recorder. All of the sounds were generated electronically.

Recorded in the spring or summer of 2007 this piece is typical of the live electronic performance sound I was pursuing at the time, using only white noise, internal mixer feedback, EQ and analogue filtering.
